Call to Artists

Project Description

The City of Anacortes installed a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 20 and Commercial Avenue recently.  The roundabout is landscaped and acts as an entryway to the City.  The Anacortes Arts Commission is accepting artist’s proposals for a sculpture or sculptural components that will, among other things, welcome people to Anacortes.  The Arts Commission is accepting proposals for EITHER an existing piece of work that will fit the site, OR ideas for original work to be commissioned for the site.  This project calls for an installation that is some or all of the following:  Welcoming.  Bold.  Creative.  Durable.  Low maintenance.  Imaginative.  Reflects Anacortes.

11 New Sculptures Hit the Streets!
The Anacortes Arts Commission has recently launched our City's inaugural Loaned Sculpture Exhibition, featuring the work of twelve Northwest artists.  23 artists entered 37 pieces this Spring, and all works were presented to a jury panel of three regionally known art experts.  Twelve distinctly unique pieces were chosen to fill the grassy knolls and entry courtyards of local businesses along Commercial Avenue.

Old Growth, a stunning Stainless Steel piece by Micajah Bienvenu from Friday Harbor, adds sparkle and statement to the grass area at the entry to the Windermere and Land Title offices.  A stately steel structure, Double Column, by Conway's Arnie Garborg adds a powerful presence to the Island Import Garage site, and a stunning stainless and bronze piece, Ringer 7 by Ulrich Pakker elegantly graces in the grassy corner at 18th and Commercial.  There is a piece by Ries Niemi from Bow called the Blue Light Special.  And Jim Lapp's Eve Goblet has found the perfect home in front of Compass Wines.

Whimsy and strenth, mixed with elegance.  Mass mixed with delicacy.  All twelve pieces are loaned by the artists for a period of 18 months.  All are available for purchase, with a portion of the sales going to the City of Anacortes to help further the mission of the Arts Commission, bringing more art to public places throughout our city.

For more information, please contact the Anacortes Parks Department at 360-293-1918.

A new publication of Anacortes Public Art
The Arts Commission has recently released a new “Arts in Anacortes” publication. It includes photos and a map of all of the public artwork on Fidalgo Island, and a listing of arts organizations that serve our community. This full color booklet was funded through the city lodging funds grant and is available at the Chamber Visitors Center or Parks & Recreation office at City Hall. Between all the work noted in the publication, there are over 300 pieces of public art on Fidalgo Island. The booklet can be viewed online through the Public Art Gallery tab.

OTHER ARTS EVENTS

Art on the Tommy Thompson
The Tommy Thompson Parkway has had a number of new pieces of arwork installed in the
last few months. Native artist Bill Baily created and donated a carved and painted wooden
totem to help with the trestle restoration project and to honor the victims of last fall’s refi nery
accident. It is located along the trail near the RV park. Bill also produced a mural as part of
the 2010 Anacortes Arts Festival, that is the 4th mural along the industrial section of the trail.
Other mural segments were produced by Carl Delutri (with the help of numerous local artists),
Audrey Roll and Cathy Schoenberg from Guemes Island. The mural project is funded
by the Art Dash, a Parks & Recreation/Anacortes Arts Festival annual half marathon, 10k, 5k
run that takes place in July. The Art Dash also funded the recently installed the metal arch
at the west end of the trestle, created by Skagit artist Reis Neimi. The arch incorporates the
word “we” in numerous languages to recognize the collective community effort in restoring it.

Arts Festival cultural performance
The Anacortes Arts Festival is bringing an exciting cultural
experience to Anacortes this fall with Ache’ Brasil
November 4th and 5th. Ache’ Brasil performs Capoeira,
which combines music, dance, and martial arts. Capoeira
(kah-poo-AIR-ah) was started by African slaves in Brazil
to develop martial arts as a means to their freedom. In
order to hide this fi ghting style from their masters, they
combined these moves with music, dance, ritual and highenergy
acrobatics. In addition to a public performance on
Fri, Nov 5th at Brodniak Hall, the Festival is partnering
with Anacortes School District to provide 3 performances
and a workshop to students. Visit the Festival website
www.AnacortesArtsFestival.com for more information
