South Commercial Art Project – Call to Artists
October 1, 2016

The Anacortes Arts Festival is working with the Anacortes Arts Commission and the City of Anacortes to enhance the south end of Commercial Avenue in Anacortes through the placement of visual artwork.   The South Commercial Art Project will include two separate components -  6 digitally produced SPLASH Murals, and 6 fiberglass painted Whale Tail Sculptures.  The work from both projects will be placed at locations between the highway 20 roundabout and 12th Street.  Selected work becomes the property of the City of Anacortes, and will remain on Commercial Avenue for a minimum of 2 years.

Whale Tails
This 3D project is open to artists, or groups of artists, from Anacortes, Guemes or Skagit County. The whale tail blank forms are fiberglass, approximately 6 feet tall and 100 pounds each.  They will be pre-primed and ready to paint.  There is no theme, and we want to see a broad representation of artistic interpretation.  They should be colorful, graphic, and have a strong visual impact to moving traffic.  We are open to other surface treatments, as long as it can be demonstrated that they will withstand the elements.

There is a $500 stipend per sculpture.  This will include supplies and labor - plus artist pickup and delivery of the sculptures.  The Festival will cover the cost of a recommended final automotive coating to preserve the sculptures.   The City of Anacortes will install the sculptures.

SPLASH Murals
This project is open to artists from Anacortes, Guemes or Skagit County.   SPLASH will use existing 2D artistic images transferred onto digital murals ranging in dimensions between 4 and 10ft (based on the size and orientation of the selected work, and location).   Original images can be paintings, photographs or digitally created work.   There is no theme, but we want the work to be colorful, graphic, and have a strong visual impact.

There is a $500 digital license fee per selected image.    The artist will provide the digital file of the image and we will work with a local sign company to reproduce and install the work as a mural.  Printing requirements are 100% to scale of work, 150 dpi.   Work owned by individuals other than the artist will require documented reproduction rights.
